Mercedes technical director Paddy Lowe reveals Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg will start using their second power unit of 2015 during this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix.

Both drivers have enjoyed perfect engine reliability on their W06 Hybrids so far this season whereas Renault-powered Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat are already on their fourth ICE out of the allocated four.

“We will bring new Power Units to this event, the second units of 2015 for each driver,” said Lowe. “Our first Power Units were used for six complete race weekends, an incredible achievement by the team at Brixworth that saw both achieve total mileages of over 4,000 km.”

If Mercedes introduces new power units at Montreal, the defending champions are yet to dip into the seven engine development tokens they have in hands to upgrade their hybrid turbo V6.

Despite experiencing a challenging start to its campaign with driveability and reliability issues aplenty, Renault has not used up any token either.

Meanwhile, a technical directive issued by the FIA has confirmed that rivals Honda and Ferrari had spent some of their tokens in an effort to cut the gap to the current championship leaders.

“It will be interesting to see whether and how the ‘balance of power’ is shifted this weekend,” concludes Lowe.
