Wolff not involved in Aston Martin talks with Vettel

As a shareholder of the Aston Martin company, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff says he has no involvement in the talks taking place between Sebastian Vettel and Racing Point.

The Silverstone-based squad will change its name to Aston Martin Racing next season in a partnership set up by common owner Lawrence Stroll.

Last week in Austria, Vettel who will leave Ferrari at the end of the current season admitted to "loose talks" taking place with Racing Point regarding a possible seat with the team for the 2021 season.

In addition to being a close friend of Lawrence Stroll, Wolff is also a 5% shareholder of Aston Martin, but the Mercedes boss insists he is not a party to talks taking place, or that may happen in the future, between Racing Point and Vettel.

"My shareholding in the car company is not related at all to the F1 racing team," Wolff said in Austria last weekend.

"I’m not involved in any discussions between Lawrence Stroll, Otmar [Szafnauer] and Sebastian.

"Obviously, I know Sebastian very well, and I’ve been part of some let’s say social gatherings, but no more than that."

Speculation continues to grow that Vettel could replace Sergio Perez at Racing Point next season. In Wolff's view, the four-time world champion would be a welcome addition to he pink squad.

"I think Checo is a very valuable part of the team, he has been a good driver, a known quantity for Racing Point," said Wolff.

"And Sebastian on the other side is a four-time world champion that brings a lot of speed, a lot of engineering expertise, and an important marketing tool to the table.

"But in the end, it will be Lawrence’s decision what the best line-up will be for his racing team."
