Kvyat held accountable, but he'll learn from this - Horner

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner was hard pressed to find a single reason to be satisfied with his team's Russian weekend following a race which saw one of his driver's ruin the other's afternoon while being on the receiving end of a third driver's wrath.

Daniil Kvyat's encounter with Sebastian Vettel, the second in succession after the pair crossing paths in China, was a two-step affair marked by clumsy driving and subsequent chaos.

In the first couple of corners after the start, Kvyat first hit the back of Vettel who was knocked into the side of Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull, and then hit the Ferrari a second time, a move which promptly buried the Ferrari into the tyre wall.

Upon his return to the pits and having changed out of his race suit, Vettel stepped up to the Red Bull pit wall to tell Horner in no uncertain terms what he thought of the Russian drivers' antics.

Horner accepted the blame be put on Kvyat, rightly refusing to exonerate his driver from any responsibilities.

"Our race was screwed at the first corner as Dany misjudged his braking point," Horner lamented.

"He [Kvyat] has apologised to the team and I think he’s apologised to Sebastian," said Horner.

"If he’s not seen him in person I’m sure he’ll do that next time he sees him, so he accepts that he made a mistake and these things happen. Unfortunately it destroyed both of our driver’s races today."

"Ricciardo drove around with a damaged car all afternoon, and we've given away a lot of points."

While the Red Bull boss held his driver accountable, it was suggested that perhaps Kvyat, in a bid to provide his home crowd with an impressive performance, simply tried too hard.

"Emotions run high for these guys, and in his home race he went for too much too soon in the first corner. I’m sure he was pumped up but I also think it just took him by surprise by what he said of how quickly the car stopped ahead of him.

"He’s young and it’s the first time he’s been involved in an accident like this and I’m sure he will learn from it.”
