Ferrari wants F1 to attract more constructors

Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene says F1 needs to aim to attract more constructors to the sport.

2014 saw a number of teams in financial difficulty, with Caterham and Marussia both entering administration, although the latter is set to be on the grid as Manor this season. With the grid down to 20 cars, Arrivabene was asked if he would like to see F1 consist of 12 two-car teams or eight three-car teams and he believes it will be better for the sport if new teams can be convinced to enter.

“It depends on the situation,” Arrivabene said. “If you are constrained to use a third car then of course you have to do it, but this is not our final goal. Our final goal is to attract other constructors, to attract other teams and to have a grid that is going to be - I don’t want to say competitive by definition but as many teams as we can.

“Of course we have to do something if it’s the case that there are not going to be enough teams, but this is not the solution. The solution is to be able to attract more teams, more constructors and to have a kind of competition that is populated by our engine manufacturers, constructors etc. This is the goal.”

FIA president Jean Todt revealed last week that the governing body is considering opening up another tender for new teams to enter F1.
