Ricciardo keen to turn the tables on Max in race

Daniel Ricciardo says he wants to respond to Max Verstappen out-qualifying him for the first time by finishing ahead of his Red Bull team-mate in the British Grand Prix.

The Australian will line up fourth on the Silverstone grid, one spot behind the Dutchman who was three tenths faster on Saturday afternoon.

Although Verstappen quickly proved to be a match for Ricciardo in terms of race pace since joining the team, the more experienced racer had kept a perfect record in qualifying.

Asked whether he was worried to see the 18-year-old quickly improve that part of his game, Ricciardo replied: “From the start Max was obviously quick. In general he had good speed.

“The last couple of races he has had a bit better race pace through various stints, so its roles reversed now. He is quicker today, so hopefully I am quicker tomorrow. I think I can be.

“I think the long runs yesterday looked pretty good. I was pretty happy with what we were doing there, and we are making progress with that. So tomorrow expect a fight.”

With memories of Verstappen passing him quickly in last weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix, Ricciardo hopes he can pull off a similar move on his team-mate at Silverstone.

“I got caught out a bit into Turn 8 last weekend, and even if there were some small reasons it is still frustrating. I want to take some accountability for that.

“You should learn after it happens once, you should learn from your mistakes, so tomorrow I don’t plan on getting passed, and I will be doing the overtaking.

“My plan is to get into third and wave goodbye.”
