Red Bull reserve driver Pierre Gasly says driving with the Halo “does not change much” in terms of visibility but adds that it “feels a bit weird” from the cockpit.
Red Bull became only the second team after Ferrari to sample the device, which the FIA aims to introduce on 2017 cars, when Gasly completed an installation lap with the cockpit protection system on the opening day of the final in-season test at Silverstone.
“It does not change much in terms of visibility but it feels a bit weird to see something above your helmet, also on the straight line you see this sort of big triangle above you,” the 20-year-old commented afterwards. “Now, I think you get used to it and you definitely can drive with it.”
Asked whether Halo is a good thing for Formula One, Gasly added: “I am not sure. I don’t really like it because for me F1 looks open cockpit but we will see.
“For sure, there are more risks [without Halo] but drivers have known this for a long time and I think all drivers that climb into a racing car are aware of the risks and accept them.
“I don’t think things should change on that front. It’s always been that way. We’ll see what happens but I like it how it is now.”
Red Bull's Christian Horner already said the team was prepared to vote against Halo, as he calls for more research and development.
