Kubica to get first taste of LMP1 in FIA WEC Rookie Test

Robert Kubica will get his first taste of prototype racing machinery this Sunday, with the former Formula One star set to drive LMP1 privateer team ByKolles' CLM P1/01-AER in the FIA WEC Rookie Test in Bahrain.

Kubica has made his return to circuit racing this year with a series of competitive outings, which included piloting a Mercedes at the 12 Hours of Mugello, driving Renault’s R.S. 01 at Spa-Francorchamps, and racing the same model at the recent 6 Hours of Rome at Vallelunga.

After winning the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix and securing a further 11 podiums, the Pole was tipped for great things in F1 but his single-seaters career abruptly stopped when he suffered a serious crash on an Italian rallying event in early 2011.

Kubica nearly had his arm amputated but he overcame the trauma to embrace a career in rallying, claiming the WRC-2 Championship in 2013.

The former grand prix ace showed promising speed upon his graduation to the premier WRC category in 2014, though it never translated into strong results.

Kubica recently told Dailysportscar.com there was a "90% chance" he would race on circuits again in 2017, while Renault team boss Frederic Vasseur revealed the 31-year-old had spent some time in Enstone's F1 simulator.
