Renault Group chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn says he would like the new F1 team to re-sign double world champion Fernando Alonso.
Alonso won his two drivers' championships with Renault in 2005 and 2006 during his first spell with the team, leaving for McLaren after his second title before returning a year later. He again departed Renault at the end of the 2009 season to race for Ferrari, but last year re-joined McLaren and endured a difficult first season with the McLaren-Honda partnership.
Ghosn is known to be a fan of Alonso's and following Renault's return as a full constructor he says he would like to see the Spaniard return for a third spell with the team in future.
“Would I like to sign Alonso? Of course, but that is not my responsibility,” Ghosn said at yesterday’s Renault launch in Guyancourt. “That responsibility lies with the team and I support their decisions.
“I’ve made a lot of friends over the years we’ve been involved in Formula One. We’ve met plenty of talented drivers and Fernando is one of the very best in the field. He is undoubtedly one of the finest competitors on the current grid”
Alonso is currently under contract at McLaren until the end of 2017 and has said he expects to see out his contract at Woking.
