Pirelli reveals driver tyre allocations for Spain

Pirelli has revealed the tyre choices for each driver at the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix, which will see the orange-marked hard compound used for the first time this year.

As part of new regulations, teams can now pick from three different tyre compounds, with an allocation of 13 sets per driver.

Of those 13 sets, Pirelli will select two sets that have to be allocated for the race (of which a driver must use one set), while a set of the softest available compound may only be used in Q3. Teams are then free to choose the remaining ten sets.

For Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Pirelli has selected the hard, medium, and soft tyre, while teams had the medium, soft, and supersoft available across the first four races of the season.

Pirelli has now announced the full choices for each driver in Spain, with Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen having one more set of soft tyres than their rivals at Mercedes, Williams, and Red Bull.

Renault's Kevin Magnussen and Jolyon Palmer are one of three pairings to opt for different choices within teams, with the Dane opting for an extra set of hads compared to his team-mate.

Toro Rosso duo Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen also slightly differ on their hard/medium choice. So do Haas’ Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutierrez.

Overall, teams have avoided the orange-walled rubber, with only one or two sets of hards allocated per driver across the field.

With Circuit of Barcelona-Catalunya hosting all eight days of pre-season testing last winter, F1 outfits had plenty of tyre data to make their picks, though they had to factor in cooler temperatures in late February/early March.
