Rosberg signs new Mercedes contract through 2018

Mercedes has confirmed that current Formula One points leader Nico Rosberg has signed a new two-year contract for the team, and will partner Lewis Hamilton until 2018.

With Rosberg’s previous deal expiring at the end of the current campaign, there had been some speculation around the German’s future with the reigning Constructors’ world champions, especially in the wake of recent clashes with his team-mate on track.

However, staying at Mercedes has always been the most likely option. Rosberg joined Mercedes in 2010 from Williams, as the German manufacturer returned to F1 with a fully-fledged works outfit. Since then, the 31-year-old has won 19 races and secured 25 pole positions.

Despite a series of flashpoints between Rosberg and Hamilton since they have been partnered, Mercedes’ line-up will thus remain unchanged for another two seasons, making it six years together for the former karting rivals.

The announcement also swiftly quashes recent rumours that Sebastian Vettel could force a move to Mercedes in 2018 should Ferrari fail to provide him with a winning car.
