Gutierrez only seeking 'solid and credible' opportunity

Following the ending of his relationship with Haas, Esteban Gutierrez has vowed to work as hard as possible to remain in Formula 1 in 2017.

The Mexican, who will be replaced in the US outfit by Kevin Magnussen, is focused on securing a drive with either Manor or Sauber , the only two teams where a seat is available for next season.

"My focus is to stay in Formula 1 at the moment, but I'm open and flexible," Gutierrez said in Abu Dhabi.

"We don't have anything to announce yet. Hopefully soon I can have the plans [settled] for next year, as it's not a nice situation, I'm working day and night trying to put everything together – this is the situation.

"But I'm here in Abu Dhabi to enjoy my last race with the team."

Reflecting on his year with Haas, Gutierrez admitted it had been an enriching experience and one his is grateful for.

"Opportunities like this are one in a million. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to work with all these people, even though it was a tough season.

I'm grateful for all the work and efforts from the whole team, from my engineers to the mechanics, my entire crew. In some ways, it's been a nice experience, very enjoyable and those memories are most important."

Regardless of his current prospects, the 25-year-old insists he is first and foremost seeking an opportunity which would benefit his career, ruling out a role as a reserve or test driver.

"I want to do things properly and not do something that would compromise other things. Therefore, I want to do something that is credible, that's solid and that is good for my career.

"I want to drive, I want to compete because this is what I like. The situation has gone in the wrong direction for my career. I'm not blaming anyone and it's my own responsibility. I'm working very hard to make the best package for my career.

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. Phillip's passion for racing grew even more when his family moved to Europe and he became acquainted with the extraordinary world of Grand Prix racing. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
