Romain Grosjean's already lousy Singapore weekend went from bad to worse on Sunday with a brake-by-wire issue leaving the Frenchman's Haas stranded in its garage, unable to start the race.

The Haas team tried its best to resolve the connection issue in time but to no avail, unfortunately.

"The guys did their best and at this stage we don't exactly know what the problem is," said Grosjean.

"I just lost the brakes but we don't know why. It's difficult because the whole team worked incredibly hard to repair the car after yesterday's damage, and we didn't even make it to the grid.

Following his crash yesterday at Turn 2 in Q2 - his second of the weekend - Grosjean believed things could not get worse, but obviously they did. His sights are now set on Malaysia in two weeks.

"Sepang is a more traditional track and one which should suit us better. We'll be able to better evaluate the updates we brought here, and hopefully achieve  a better result."

Phillip van Osten

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. Phillip's passion for racing grew even more when his family moved to Europe and he became acquainted with the extraordinary world of Grand Prix racing. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
