Hamilton, Rosberg differ on tyre choices for Austria

Pirelli has announced the tyre choices made by each team for the Austrian Grand Prix, with a small difference in compound allocations for Mercedes team-mates and title rivals Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton.

As part of new regulations, teams can now pick from three different compounds, with an allocation of 13 sets per driver.

Of those 13 sets, Pirelli will select two sets that have to be allocated for the race (of which a driver must use one set), while a set of the softest available compound may only be used in Q3. Teams are then free to choose the remaining ten sets.

Pirelli has nominated the soft, supersoft and new-for-2016 ultrasoft tyre for the Red Bull Ring event.

Hamilton and Rosberg are one of five pairings to opt for different choices within teams, with the championship leader opting for an extra set of supersoft compared to his British team-mate. The triple world champion thus only has one set of softs for the entire race weekend in Spielberg.

The Williams, Renault, Sauber, and Haas pairings also differ on their soft and supersoft choices. Such an approach sees drivers use different compounds for the long runs in FP2 before sharing the data.

Ferrari and Renault have gone for the most aggressive strategy, with nine sets of ultrasofts available for each of their drivers.

Haas' Romains Grosjean and Esteban Gutierrez, who usually load up on the softest available compound, will only get six sets of the purple-banded rubber in Zeltweg.
