Lando Norris edged championship leader Kimi Antonelli by just 0.001s to top the third and final practice session for the Mexico City Grand Prix, setting up an intriguing qualifying battle at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

The McLaren driver delivered a late improvement to snatch the fastest time after an increasingly competitive session in which all four leading teams showed encouraging pace, with Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri also firmly in contention.

A relatively quiet opening phase gave Ryo Hirakawa plenty of opportunity to familiarise himself with the Haas, having returned to the cockpit as Esteban Ocon's replacement for the remainder of the weekend.

The circumstances surrounding the Frenchman's sudden benching remain unclear, although it’s been speculated that the Frenchman’s heated exchange with his race engineer during Friday’s FP2 may have led to his exit.

Meanwhile, Antonelli and Leclerc traded early blows on medium tyres, with Ferrari looking particularly comfortable after a productive opening day.

Lewis Hamilton, having lost valuable running time on Friday due to an engine problem, soon joined the fight at the front. The seven-time world champion posted a 1m18.268s before improving to 1m18.162s, with Leclerc slotting between his team-mates before Hamilton reclaimed the top spot.

Antonelli remained in the hunt, but Red Bull and McLaren initially appeared a step behind the two Ferraris.

Norris strikes in a tight finale

The arrival of the soft tyres changed the picture. Norris briefly moved ahead with a 1m17.873s, putting team-mate Oscar Piastri and Mercedes' George Russell behind him.

Russell, however, was struggling for grip through the challenging Turn 12 right-hander leading into the Foro Sol stadium, while Leclerc's untidy passage through the Esses compromised his first flying lap.

Antonelli seized the opportunity with a 1m17.601s, although the Mercedes youngster was visibly frustrated after complaining about Max Verstappen impeding him at Turn 1.

The championship leader subsequently went purple in the opening sector but couldn't improve his overall time. Norris made no such mistake, finding just enough to edge Antonelli by a thousandth of a second and claim the session's bragging rights ahead of qualifying.

Leclerc finished third, 0.117s off the pace, followed closely by Piastri. Verstappen was fifth, 0.351s behind Norris, with the Red Bull driver still wrestling with brake problems.

Hamilton ended up sixth after an untidy final sector, ahead of Russell and Isack Hadjar, who was decidedly unimpressed with his Red Bull, describing it as "the worst car I've driven this weekend, it's terrible".

Racing Bulls again looked competitive in the midfield, with Liam Lawson edging rookie team-mate Arvid Lindblad to ninth.

Engine troubles hit the midfield

There was less cheer elsewhere. Hirakawa finished 19th, just ahead of Valtteri Bottas, while Gabriel Bortoleto failed to register a time after an apparent power unit problem on his out-lap sent smoke billowing from his Audi.

Home favourite Sergio Perez also remained sidelined, with Cadillac confirming that a precautionary engine change would be required ahead of qualifying.

With the top five covered by just 0.351s, Saturday's battle for pole promises to be a particularly close affair.
