McLaren racing director Eric Boullier says the team has to improve “everywhere” rather than just focus on Honda’s woes.
While Honda’s struggles since the start of the season have been well documented, McLaren has been keen to stress it has made a step forward with its chassis which is being masked by the power unit. However, Boullier insists there is still plenty of work to be done with the MP4-30 and when asked where the biggest improvements can come from, he replied: “Everywhere.
“If you want to win we have to be the best everywhere in terms of aerodynamics, in terms of chassis, in terms of power unit, driveability. So we have to improve everywhere.
“We are lacking in downforce in order to be the top chassis. So we have to work on this and make the car better but it’s a new concept we started this year, a new philosophy. And obviously on the Honda side as well there is obviously still some work to be done in terms of performance.”
With McLaren shareholder Mansour Ojjeh present in Canada, Boullier says any pressure from the team’s owners is to be expected.
“There is pressure, it’s normal. We are all competitors, we want to win, we want to be competitive, so there is pressure on Honda, pressure on McLaren and [from] our shareholders, yes. Of course, they are just like any company in the world.
“We don’t have any extraordinary pressure or whatever. We are professional and transparent enough, they know what we are doing and I hope we know what we are doing as well.”
