Felipe Massa thinks the solution to Williams beating Ferrari on pace lies in the Grove-based outfit making its latest updates “better”.
The British squad brought several evolutions to its FW37 for last weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix, with Massa eventually claiming Williams’ second consecutive podium finish.
But the Brazilian’s first top-three finish since the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix only materialised after Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel suffered a slow pit stop, which allowed Massa to leapfrog the German.
“Everything we brought here we are using on the car,” said the 34-year-old. “So for sure there is still some work we need to do to make the pieces that we brought even better.
“It’s definitely positive, so everything we saw in the wind tunnel we can see here at the track.
“We cannot forget that Ferrari have a strong car. They were a little bit quicker than me, so we need to push hard and we need to try to make this car maybe a little bit quicker, then we can fight at a good level, maybe being quicker than them in the next races, so that’s what we want.
“There is still some more working, some details that we need to improve but I’m sure we’re going to do that.”
Before travelling to Silverstone for its home race, Williams will try to extract further performance from its updates over the upcoming in-season test, which takes places at Spielberg on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Test driver Susie Wolff will return to the wheel for the first time since the previous in-season session at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, while Massa’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas will be in action during the final day of running in Austria.
