Overtaking gets a boost in Melbourne with third DRS zone

The FIA has added a third DRS zone to boost overtaking at Melbourne's Albert Park circuit in this weekend's opening round of the 2018 world championship.

The Australian Grand Prix venue initially featured two DRS zones at the exit of Turns 2 and 16, triggered by a single detection point upon the entry to Turn 14.

The governing body has added a third zone for this weekend's curtain-raiser, the detection point of which be located 170 meters before Turn 11 before running through Turn 12 to 13.

Following last year's event, in which overtaking opportunities were scarce, Melbourne's promoters contemplated the idea of tweaking the track's layout around the Turn 11/12 complex.

The new DRS zone is intended to help drivers get closer to a preceding car, and profit from the DRS detection zone that follows before Turn 14.
