Niki Lauda, who underwent lung transplant surgery last week in Austria, is making steady progress according to a statement released on Monday by the AHK Vienna hospital.
The F1 legend fell ill while on holiday in Ibiza last month, with a chronic cough compelling the Mercedes non-executive chairman to seem medical help in his home country.
A severe lung infection led a rapid transplant, and while Lauda's condition was life threatening, his condition was stabilized to the satisfaction of his doctors in the aftermath of the heavy surgery.
"Already 24 hours after surgery Mr Lauda could be extubated, was spontaneously breathing and had full consciousness," reads a statement from the hospital.
"During the following days his condition has further improved continuously. Mr Lauda will stay at the Vienna General Hospital until his full recovery."
The surgery was performed by specialist Walter Klepetko, head of the hospital's thoracic surgery unit, and Konrad Hotzenecker.
A best case scenario would see Lauda fully recovered and returning to work in a matter of weeks.
