Jos Verstappen believes his son Max is now using his head more often during his races, and avoiding the pitfalls that undermined his efforts in the past and earlier this season.
Verstappen endured an erratic start to his 2018 campaign, but progressively the 20-year-old Red Bull charger has focused on consistency without sacrificing any of his speed.
"You can see the progress he has made during the year," Jos Verstappen told told Ziggo Sport.
"After Monaco, he took some good steps. He now thinks a bit more during the races."
Despite Daniel Ricciardo winning twice this year compared to Verstappen's single win - achieved in Austria - the latter's track record his put him 24 points clear of his team mate in the drivers' standings.
Verstappen has also outqualified Ricciardo for ten consecutive races, or every single race since Monaco.
Referring to his son's improved attitude, Jos believes his own input ad advice has helped.
"Did I tell him that? Yes, several times," laughed the former F1 driver.
"We discuss everything together and he listens, because we have agreed that I can always have my say. But he does what he wants."
