European Formula 3 champion Mick Schumacher will compete in next year's FIA Formula 2 champion, the driver confirmed on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher will stay with the PREMA Theodore Racing squad which was behind his title success in 2018.

"Delighted to announce that I will continue the partnership with PREMA for 2019, making the step up to the FIA Formula 2," he posted on Twitter.

“We are proud to welcome Mick to our Formula 2 operation for 2019," said team boss Rene Rosin in the official announcement.

"He is an extremely talented and dedicated racer, working with him is a pleasure and we can't wait to begin this adventure together.

“This Championship is not an easy one due to its learning curve for rookies especially with the introduction of the new car," he continued. "But we think that Mick has the maturity and skills needed to make it.

“We are excited for the start of the next chapter in his career and we are happy to be part of it."

Schumacher himself was delighted to seal the next step on the ladder to his ultimate goal in Formula 1.

“I'm really looking forward to contesting my next season with Prema in FIA Formula 2," he said. "[It's] a logical step on my sporting path in my view.

"I want to further improve my technical experience and driving skills,” he explained.

"For me, it was very clear to go into Formula 2 with Prema. I can't thank the Prema family enough for what we achieved together as a team, especially this year, how we continued to develop together.

“I’m also really excited to drive the Formula 2 tests in Abu Dhabi.”

The post-season test is scheduled to take place at Yas Marina Circuit later this week, from November 29 until December 1.

Sauber Formula 1 test driver Tatiana Calderon is also expected to take part, and will be turning out for the Charouz Racing System team.

Schumacher has also confirmed that he will take part in January's Race of Champions event in Mexico City, representing Team Germany alongside Sebastian Vettel.
