Fernando Alonso says Aston Martin won't need to wait for its works partnership with Honda to kick off in 2026 to fight for the world title in Formula 1.
Aston and Honda announced this week that they would join forces in 2026, a move that will provide the Silverstone-based outfit with complete design autonomy, contrary to its current situation that sees it rely on a drivetrain and rear suspension supplied by Mercedes.
Coupled with Aston's new state-of-the-art factory and wind tunnel, the works supply deal with Honda will help propel Aston to the next level and fulfil the big ambitions of its team owner, billionaire Lawrence Stroll.
"It's very good news for the team, very excited," said Alonso ahead of this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix.
"I think it shows the commitment of Aston Martin to really win races, win championships in the future being independent, manufacturing their own gearboxes and everything on the car.
"It's the only way probably, to really be 100% sure that you are in control of everything in your package, in your car. And it's a great sign for everybody in Aston Martin.
"You know that the desire and the potential to win is there."
The 41-year-old says there are only benefits to being a works team, but he also believes that Aston won't need to wait three years to fight for championship glory.
"In 2026 when the new regulations will come, it is always better if you can develop your power unit together with the chassis and have everything integrated well in advance," he said.
"Being a works team there are only benefits, but that doesn't mean that until 2026 Aston Martin will not have a chance to win the championship."
