In a significant development ahead of the 2024 Formula 1 season, Haas technical director Simone Resta has stepped down from his role.
Resta's departure comes as part of a restructuring within the Haas organization, with Ferrari – who loaned out the Italian engineer to the US outfit – reportedly considering bringing him back into their own F1 team.
Resta, a seasoned engineer with extensive experience at Ferrari, initially joined Haas in 2021 as part of an enhanced technical alliance between the two teams. This arrangement aimed to leverage Ferrari's expertise and resources to elevate Haas's performance.
However, despite Resta's involvement and Ferrari's support, Haas has significantly struggled to achieve the anticipated breakthrough in the ground effect era.
Haas' VF-23, while exhibiting promising pace in qualifying, consistently faltered during races due to chronic tyre degradation issues.
The team's disappointing performance was further underscored by the underwhelming impact of a major upgrade introduced at the United States Grand Prix. This design shift, aimed at addressing Haas's race-pace woes, failed to yield the desired results.
With the 2024 season fast approaching, it is believed that Ferrari has opted to terminate Resta's loan arrangement with Haas.
While there has been no official announcement from the Italian outfit regarding Resta's future, there is speculation that he could be brought back to Maranello at the behest of Scuderia boss Fred Vasseur.
Intriguingly, according to Motorsport.com, rumors have also surfaced linking Resta with a potential role at the Sauber squad.
This would be a homecoming for Resta, who previously held a technical director position at Sauber under the Alfa Romeo banner. Sauber is currently preparing for Audi's anticipated entry into Formula One in 2026.
