Zhou eyes Cadillac F1 opportunity with key connection

Zhou Guanyu has set his sights on returning to Formula 1 in 2026, with the new Cadillac F1 team emerging as a potential destination thanks to a key link between the nascent outfit and the Chinese driver.

Zhou was dropped by Sauber at the end of a challenging 2024 Formula 1 season, although the 25-year-old delivered to the Hinwil squad his sole points finish of the season, with eight places in Qatar.

Despite dropping off the grid, he remains optimistic about his future prospects, particularly with the arrival of GM's Cadillac branded F1 team.

“I'm fully aware of, you know, that GM and Cadillac joined the grid,” Zhou commented earlier this month, quoted by Motorsport Week.

“I think it's very good for the sport in general because a lot of people are always talking about having probably not enough seats for the young drivers available.

“Clearly, I think we have a lot of young drivers for next year. And then, I think from my position, it's a great opportunity and a great chance for next season that I'm not having a seat.

“So I can probably think about what the future will be and try to have an opportunity there.”

Inside Connections and Strategic Moves

Zhou's path to Cadillac may already have a foundation. His manager, Graeme Lowdon – formerly Marussia's sporting director in F1 a decade ago – has been named team principal of the Cadillac F1 project.

Additionally, the American outfit has secured a customer engine deal with Ferrari for 2026, and speculation Zhou suggests he could join Ferrari as a reserve driver next season.

These connections could position Zhou as a leading candidate for one of Cadillac's seats when they debut in 2026.

A Patient but Determined Approach

For now, Zhou is focusing on staying ready and keeping his options open. While other out-of-contract drivers often turn to different racing series, Zhou has decided against committing to another championship in 2025.

“I kind of decided not to take another series,” he explained. “There are so many doors that could be potentially open, not just during next year, but also the year after.

“I want to make sure if there's a chance for me in case, you know, to be stepping back into a seat for one race or not, I'll be fully here to do so. So that's very important.”

Zhou reiterated his commitment to reclaiming a full-time seat on the grid.

“My priority is trying to, like I always said, having another chance of coming back on the grid,” he said.

“So for me, I don't really have where I go, but if there's a chance to record, I will absolutely take it. So let's see how the future is.”

As Cadillac builds its team and prepares for its debut, Zhou's experience and determination could align perfectly with the aspirations of the new team.

For now, Zhou waits in the wings, ready for any opportunity to step back into the pinnacle of motorsport.
