The seven-time world champion set a blistering 1m 30.849s in SQ3, securing the top spot for Saturday’s Sprint race, while McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc followed closely in a nail-biting session.
The fight for pole was razor-thin, with Verstappen unable to match Hamilton’s pace in the final moments. Piastri and Leclerc locked out the top four, showcasing McLaren and Ferrari’s strong form.
Mercedes’ George Russell claimed fifth, capitalizing on a late error from McLaren’s Lando Norris, who faltered in SQ3 after a promising start, abandoning his second lap following a mistake.
Kimi Antonelli, Russell’s teammate, impressed in sixth, trailing by half a second, while Yuki Tsunoda (Racing Bulls), Alex Albon (Williams), and Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) completed the top 10.
Midfield Mix and Early Exits
Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso narrowly missed SQ3, settling for 11th, but Haas rookie Ollie Bearman carried himself up to P12, outpacing Williams’ Carlos Sainz, Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto, and Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar.
Alpine faced a grim afternoon, with both cars eliminated in SQ1—Jack Doohan outpacing teammate Pierre Gasly in 16th and 17th, respectively.
They were joined in the early exit by Haas’ Esteban Ocon and Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg, who also struggled to find pace.
The session proved challenging for Red Bull’s Liam Lawson, whose Melbourne woes extended to Shanghai on Friday.
A deleted lap for track limits violations in SQ1 relegated the New Zealander to a dismal 20th, last on the grid.
