McLaren has announced that their promising young talent, Alex Dunne, will take the wheel of the MCL39 for his second Formula 1 FP1 session of the season at the Italian Grand Prix this weekend.
The 19-year-old Irish driver, a key member of McLaren’s development program, will replace championship leader Oscar Piastri during Friday’s opening practice at the historic Monza circuit.
Dunne’s first FP1 appearance came earlier this season in Austria, where he impressed the paddock by setting the fourth fastest, just 0.069 seconds behind teammate Oscar Piastri.
His performance showcased his potential as a rising star, and this weekend’s outing at Monza offers another opportunity to prove his mettle on one of Formula 1’s most storied tracks.
Currently competing in Formula 2 with Rodin Motorsport, Dunne remains a strong contender in the championship, sitting fifth overall, 30 points behind leader Leonardo Fornaroli.
The young driver briefly led the F2 standings earlier this year, underlining his consistency and speed. Beyond Formula 1 and F2, Dunne has also taken on reserve driver duties for NEOM McLaren in Formula E, participating in Season 11 test sessions.
Excitement for Monza Opportunity
Dunne expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming FP1 session, highlighting the significance of driving at Monza.
“I’m super excited to be back for my second FP1 with McLaren at Monza this weekend,” he said.
“My first one in Austria was an extremely special for one for me, but to do it again at Monza, a track that is so historic and prestigious, is going to put a big smile on my face.
“So, really looking forward to it. Hopefully, I can build and improve on what was a strong outing in Austria and help Lando and Oscar as much as possible going into that weekend.”
With his sights set on contributing to McLaren’s preparations for the Italian Grand Prix, Dunne aims to further demonstrate his capabilities while gaining valuable experience at the Temple of Speed.
As McLaren continues to nurture their young talent, all eyes will be on Dunne to see if he can replicate or even surpass his standout performance from Austria.
