George Russell has admitted that Formula 1’s summer shutdown could not have arrived at a more necessary time after the Mercedes driver endured what he describes as the most difficult period in his racing career.
For a driver who has rarely complained and has built his reputation on resilience, Russell’s admission reflects just how draining the 2026 season has become.
Despite Mercedes producing one of the strongest cars on the grid and team-mate Kimi Antonelli heading into the break with a commanding championship lead, Russell’s own campaign has been overshadowed by a relentless sequence of setbacks.
The Briton began the year strongly with a win in Australia followed by a runner-up sport behind Antonelli in China, but momentum faded thereafter. Reliability problems, including a recurring power unit deployment issue, have repeatedly disrupted Russell’s races, while a throttle failure last weekend at the Hungarian Grand Prix left him fighting back from the very bottom of the order.
In dire need of a break
Russell has not hidden his frustration, admitting that the constant setbacks have taken an emotional toll not only on him but also on the wider Mercedes operation.
“Obviously the problems are happening, but the whole team feels it as well, so they're as pissed off as I am with how it's unfolded,” Russell said. “We need to look at ourselves and ensure there's nothing we're doing wrong that is contributing to these errors.
“Obviously, Oscar [Piastri] had his thing [in Hungary] as well. It's not like we're the only one, but it does feel like it is happening substantially more to me than others, and hopefully it swings around.

“I don't wish any bad luck on anyone, but I've never had a season like this in my whole career, let alone my F1 career.
“I usually don't feel like I need a break. This year, I definitely feel like I need one.”
The comments underline a rare moment of vulnerability from Russell, who has spent much of his career pushing through adversity. But after a season filled with unexpected obstacles, even his trademark determination has been tested.
For a driver who normally thrives on the challenge, this time away may be less about preparation and more about recovery – a chance to reset before attempting to turn around a season that has tested his patience like never before.
