Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov finally got his long-awaited taste of Formula 1 machinery on Wednesday at Imola, and the current leader of the FIA F1 Championship wasted little time making the opportunity count.
The 19-year-old Bulgarian driver climbed aboard Racing Bulls VCARB 02 at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari for his first Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) outing in an F1 car, turning what had been a much-anticipated milestone into a marathon day of running.
By the time Tsolov climbed out of the cockpit, he had accumulated an impressive 690km around the Italian circuit – a substantial first helping of F1 experience for a driver who has increasingly found himself linked with a Racing Bulls seat for 2027.
A dream day finally arrives
Tsolov has watched several of his F2 rivals get their opportunities in F1 machinery while waiting patiently for his own chance. That wait ended at Imola, and judging by his reaction, the 19-year-old Bulgarian had no intention of taking a single lap for granted.
"First TPC day in a Formula 1 car done, and I’m super happy with how today went," said Tsolov. "I really enjoyed every lap, and it’s difficult to put into words what it means to finally get this opportunity.
"A massive thank you to VCARB and the Red Bull Junior Team for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. It’s something I’ve been working towards my whole life, so to finally experience it is pretty incredible.
"I still don’t think I’ve fully comprehended what we achieved today, but I enjoyed every lap and hopefully I’ll get the chance to add some more kilometres soon.”
Those final words will certainly catch the attention of anyone following Tsolov's progress. More F1 mileage could be on the horizon, with the youngster potentially eligible to make a free-practice appearance once FIA approval is secured.
The opportunity is particularly significant given Tsolov's position within the Red Bull ladder.
He currently leads the F2 championship and has been tipped as a potential contender for a Racing Bulls promotion next season. His Imola outing therefore represented much more than a box-ticking exercise: it was a first chance to demonstrate his readiness for the next step.
Red Bull sees the right ingredients
For Racing Bulls, meanwhile, the test provided another important piece of the team's long-term development programme.
Team principal Alan Permane was encouraged by what he saw from the young charger, particularly the way Tsolov settled into the unfamiliar environment.
"Today was a really positive step for Nikola," said Racing Bulls team principal Alan Permane.
"He adapted quickly to the car and showed the composure you want to see from a driver taking on an F1 car for the first time. The outing is part of the ongoing development plan the team runs for its junior drivers, giving them the tools, the mileage, and the environment to develop.
"We've seen time and again what this pathway can produce, and it’s days like today that are part of how we keep building it."

That pathway has already produced plenty of F1 graduates, and Tsolov now has his first serious taste of what awaits him at the top of the Red Bull system.
With 690km banked and an F1 debut finally under his belt, the Bulgarian has given himself another reason to dream big. The next question is no longer whether he can get behind the wheel of an F1 car — but how soon he will get to do it again.
