Sebastian Vettel walked away from Formula 1 nearly four years ago, but the door to the paddock has not been completely closed to the four-time world champion.
The German retiree insists he is perfectly content with life away from the fast lane, yet his latest comments leave open an intriguing possibility: Vettel could one day return to F1.
Vettel left the sport at the end of 2022 after two difficult seasons with Aston Martin, bringing down the curtain on a career that had already taken him through Toro Rosso, Red Bull and Ferrari. His four consecutive championships with the bulls between 2010 and 2013 have cemented his place among the sport's elite.
Since then, however, Vettel has largely remained on the outside looking in. His recent appearance at Monza, where he drove Michael Schumacher's 2002 Ferrari during a demonstration run, offered a reminder that his connection with F1 has never completely disappeared.
‘I’m always open for what comes around the corner’
Speaking to BBC 5 Live, Vettel made clear that retirement has given him something he values highly — time.
“Obviously, I enjoy the time that I have,” he began. “I think it's a privilege to be in that position with family, but also I run a little farm at home, so looking after that. I'm still very much involved in the sport.
“I don't have an active role at the moment, but very much following what's going on and caring about the sport's future.
“Especially [F1's net zero goal in] 2030 or the new regulations, what might change.
“I'm always open for what comes around the corner in terms of maybe a role in the future, but I'm not actively pursuing it.
“I'm not speaking to teams or individuals and dropping my CV here and there but following from the outside with great joy and pleasure.”
That sounds less like a comeback campaign than a door deliberately left ajar. Vettel is not knocking on team principals’ doors or searching for a seat, but neither is he ruling out a return should an opportunity emerge that genuinely interests him.
A different kind of F1 comeback?
Vettel’s interests since retirement offer perhaps the biggest clue about where such a role could eventually lead.
His environmental and sustainability projects became increasingly prominent during the latter stages of his driving career, and the German remains particularly interested in where F1 is heading as it targets net zero by 2030 and prepares for further regulatory changes.
“Obviously, the topics that have been in my head the final years of my active career are still very much there and present,” he said.
“So topics around sustainability, around the future, not just for myself, for my children, but for all of us and the future of the sport.
“That's where it closes the loop and the projects that I've done, some of them visible at the track, others less visible, I'm very much thinking about the ideas that I have for what might come next.”
That makes a return as a full-time driver appear considerably less obvious than a future role connected to the wider direction of the sport.
Vettel has already demonstrated that his interests extend well beyond lap times, and his comments suggest he is thinking about how that experience could eventually be put to use.

A return to racing has flirted with becoming reality before. Vettel tested a Porsche 963 Hypercar amid speculation about a possible Le Mans appearance in 2024, although no race programme materialised.
For now, his farm, family and projects remain the priority. But with Vettel admitting he is “always open” to whatever comes next, the four-time champion has left just enough mystery surrounding his future to keep the F1 paddock wondering whether this really is the end of his story in the sport.
