Max Verstappen claimed top spot in a closely contested final practice session for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, edging Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli by just 0.025s as Lewis Hamilton endured a worrying mechanical problem that curtailed his preparations.

With rain threatening Interlagos, the field wasted little time getting out on track, making the most of the available dry running.

That was particularly important for Nico Hulkenberg, whose Audi had been sidelined throughout Friday's second session following a terminal problem during FP1.

The opening 40 minutes were dominated by medium-tyre running, with Antonelli establishing the benchmark at 1m12.209s. The newly crowned world champion was just 0.075s clear of Verstappen, who complained of heavy steering to the right, while also reporting a problem with his steering wheel.

Charles Leclerc occupied third, 0.230s off the pace, ahead of George Russell, Liam Lawson and Oscar Piastri, all within half a second of the Mercedes driver.

Lawson was particularly impressive, setting the fastest time in the final sector and comfortably outperforming Racing Bulls team-mate Arvid Lindblad, as the New Zealander established himself as one of the midfield's leading contenders.

Hamilton, meanwhile, was already expressing concerns about his Ferrari, reporting strange vibrations from his new powertrain alongside excessive engine braking. He was only eighth, ahead of Isack Hadjar, who described his RB22 as "close to undriveable".

The switch to soft tyres brought another change at the front, with Verstappen producing a 1m11.622s to narrowly beat Antonelli's 1m11.647s. Lando Norris moved McLaren into third, just 0.131s behind, followed by Russell and Leclerc.

The top four teams were separated by a mere 0.274s, promising a potentially fascinating qualifying battle.

Further back, Lindblad reversed the earlier order by finishing a tenth ahead of Lawson, although both Racing Bulls remained comfortably clear of the remaining midfield runners.

Hamilton's session, however, took a more alarming turn. His Ferrari developed a worrying noise, accompanied by what he described as "smoke in the cockpit", forcing him to remain in the garage and abandon any soft-tyre running. He finished 12th.

Haas rookie Rafael Camara placed 15th, 0.128s ahead of Bearman, while Lance Stroll brought up the rear after a suspected ERS failure ended his session with 15 minutes remaining.

Verstappen heads into qualifying with the advantage, but the margins suggest there will be little room for error.
