Fernando Alonso says his move to join McLaren at the start of its partnership with Honda provides “a new motivation” for him.

Five seasons at Ferrari failed to yield a third drivers’ championship for Alonso, with the Spaniard opting to leave the team before the end of his contract to join McLaren. Despite moving to a team which has failed to win a race since the end of the 2012 season, Alonso says the potential offered at McLaren-Honda gives him fresh motivation ahead of the new season.

“I am very happy to be part of this new era of the McLaren-Honda partnership. I had the honour of being the first in the car on the first day and do the first couple of laps. It is a very challenging time for all of us trying to succeed with this project.

“I’m very excited to be part of the McLaren-Honda family. After many years in Formula One I feel the new motivation and the adrenaline of competing at the maximum level with the best possible team.

“My message for the fans will be to support us, enjoy the season as we will do and be ready for some victories hopefully soon.”
