As McLaren ends it contract with Jenson Button, racing director Eric Boullier has paid tribute to the Briton's contribution to the Woking-based oufit's history.
Button remained contracted to McLaren this year, substituting for Indy-bound Fernando Alonso at Monaco and working as the brand's ambassador.
But the Briton now moves on to another chapter in his motorsport life, one which won't include McLaren for the first time in eight years.
"Jenson has been a brilliant driver and ambassador for us, for Formula 1 and for England as well," said Boullier.
"His contract is ending at the end of this year but he will always be part of the McLaren family and always have a special place for us.
"That's life and this is another step and another chapter, with Lando (Norris) stepping in to the third driver role."
Button has not yet finalized his plans for 2018, but is certain he'll remain active on one front or the other.
The 2009 world champion was considered for a seat with Penske-Acura in IMSA for 2018 but was ultimately not included in the team's final line-up.
It is believed that Honda has offered the 37-year-old a full-time job in Super GT next season in one of its Acura NSX cars, and a schedule which would allow for a participation in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the Sebring 12 Hours and Petit Le Mans.
"Next year I will race something. I don't know what yet whether it be in America, Europe or Japan. There are a few options but I want to do a full season."
