Renault test and development driver Artem Markelov will enjoy his first official F1 outing later this month when he replaces Carlos Sainz in the Russian Grand Prix's first free practice session.
Artem, who is currently fifth in the FIA Formula 2 Championship with the Russian Time squad, will combine his FP1 duties in Sochi with the penultimate round of this year's F2 season.
"This is the best early birthday present I could get and I am determined to make the most of this opportunity," said the 23-year-old Russian-born driver who will celebrate his birthday on September 10.
"Being part of Renault Sport Formula One Team has helped me as a racing driver so to be able to put these lessons into practice in Sochi is a tremendous honour."
Markelov was given his maiden F1 run with Renault earlier this summer, at the post-Hungarian GP in-season test.
Renault Sport F1 boss Cyril Abiteboul says Markelov's impressive performances this season warranted the young charger being entrusted with the team's R.S.18 in FP1.
"We are happy to give Artem this opportunity behind the wheel of the Renault R.S.18 at his home Grand Prix," said Abiteboul.
"Artem has shown on and off track this year that he is a valuable team member.
"Artem was able to prove at the in-season test in Budapest that he deserved this opportunity and we are looking forward to seeing him in action for FP1 at Sochi."
