De Vries still uncertain what the future will bring

Nyck de Vries will try to continue to "deliver and perform" in 2022, although the reigning Formula E champion has yet to decide where he will apply his skills next season.

De Vries clinched the 2020-21 FE title with Mercedes at the all-electric series' final round in Berlin, an achievement that put the 26-year-old on the short list of the Williams and Alfa Romeo F1 teams.

Given his Mercedes backing, the Dutchman appeared well-placed to fill a seat at Williams until the Grove-based outfit opted to bring Red Bull's Alex Albon back to the F1 fold, while Alfa Romeo looks set to nominate Chinese hopeful Guanyu Zhou as its second driver alongside Valtteri Bottas for 2022.

Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff hopes de Vries will remain with the German manufacturer for its final season in Formula E, although his involvement has yet to be confirmed.

"First of all, I am very flattered and honoured that my name is linked to a couple of Formula 1 teams and that my name has been in the air quite a lot recently," said De Vries, speaking on a recent The Race Formula E podcast.

"I am also honoured by the words especially Toto [Wolff] has said about me, but ultimately I am very well aware that in this world things change very quickly."

While keeping his ear to the ground, De Vries says he's taking a pragmatic approach to his future.

"I’m a very realistic person and I always focus on what’s the duty of today and that’s really where my focus is," he added. "So what the future brings, I don’t know.

"Things change quickly anyway and in order to earn my opportunities and open up doors going forward in my career, I will have to continue to deliver and perform in every race and weekend I do.

"That’s where my focus and passion is actually and all the rumours, that’s the media and I have nothing to tell you. Time will tell."
