Tech F1i: Four teams introduce upgrades in Shanghai

McLaren is the only leading team to introduce new components on its MCL39 in Shanghai, while three other outfits have also implemented changes.

Formula 1’s back-to-back races in Melbourne and in Shanghai were obviously not conducive to a majority of the teams’ development schedules, while Australia had already seen a raft of evolutions since pre-season testing.

McLaren has nevertheless been active between its campaign’s for two rounds, while Racing Bulls, Williams and Sauber have also opted to tweak their designs.

McLaren has introduced a new rear brake duct winglet to the MCL39 for this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix. This component is designed to enhance the local airflow around the rear tires and the car's floor.

By optimizing these aerodynamic interactions, the winglet contributes to improved overall aerodynamic performance, potentially leading to better handling and increased speed on the track.

Racing Bulls has updated the VCARB 02 for the Chinese Grand Prix with new front wing gurney options to increase aerodynamic balance and grip on high-downforce circuits.

Additionally, a two-element beam wing with greater camber and a raised trailing edge enhances rear load but adds some drag, improving stability in cornering.

Williams has introduced a new main beam wing for the FW47 at the Chinese Grand Prix, featuring a larger span than the version used in Melbourne. An optional forward lower wing can also be fitted alongside it.

These new beam wing options generate increased load and drag from the rear wing assembly, providing a more efficient aerodynamic performance at medium-high downforce circuits.

Finally, Sauber has introduced an updated engine cover on the C45 for the Chinese Grand Prix, aiming to improve aerodynamic performance. This new design optimizes the flow field around the bodywork surfaces, enhancing both overall downforce and aerodynamic efficiency.
