Aston Martin team boss Andy Cowell has firmly denied speculation that the Silverstone-based squad could pursue George Russell for the 2026 Formula 1 season, reiterating that the team’s commitment lies with its current driver line-up of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.
Rumors had suggested that Aston Martin was closely watching Russell’s situation at Mercedes, with his contract set to expire at the end of 2025 and uncertainty surrounding the team’s driver line-up amid its interest in Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
But Cowell made it clear that Aston Martin is not in the market for a driver shake-up.
Russell also expressed his confidence in extending his allegiance to Mercedes, stating recently that he is not exploring options with any other teams.
Stability Key for 2026 Success
Cowell highlighted the pivotal role that Alonso and Stroll will play in navigating the team through the upcoming technical overhaul, which includes new power units and aerodynamic rules.
“We’re super fortunate. We’ve got this exciting run into ’26. Changing the power unit – we’re working with Honda on that – changing the aerodynamics, we’ve got Adrian [Newey] working on that, we’ve got new facilities,” Cowell told reporters at Silverstone last weekend.
“But the stability that we’ve got in having Lance and Fernando signed up for next year means that they’re not only helping us now develop the tools that we’re using for ’26, ’27 and beyond, but they’re working directly on the concept of the car.”
Cowell went on to note how the team is already diving into detailed discussions that directly involve driver input – an area where consistency pays off.
“The discussions in the wind tunnel are about the aerodynamic shape, but they’re also about driver environment.
“How much space is there in the cockpit? Adrian tends not to leave much space in the cockpit. Everything’s exceptionally tight.
“But that stability of having two drivers signed up through into ’26 is really helping us,” he added.
Russell’s future remains a hot topic in the F1 paddock as Mercedes juggles potential moves involving Verstappen and rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Though Russell has indicated he expects to remain on the grid beyond 2025, he has also maintained that he hasn’t engaged in talks with rival teams.
As far as Aston Martin is concerned, however, their future is already decided – and George Russell will not be part of it.
