Fernando Alonso lit up the Singapore Grand Prix with grit, guile, and a touch of his trademark mischief – and this time, his sharpest move came not on track, but on social media.
The two-time world champion powered his way to a hard-fought seventh place under the dazzling Marina Bay lights, but it wasn’t just his on-track heroics that stole the spotlight.
Alonso took cheeky a jab at Formula 1’s broadcast team for airing one of his in-race radio outbursts while missing the thrilling late-race duel between himself and Lewis Hamilton.
The Aston Martin charger’s night was a classic Alonso performance: a rollercoaster of frustration, determination, and flair.
Communication Breakdown
Starting 10th, he rocketed up the order in the opening laps – only for a sluggish pit stop to drop him to P15 behind Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar. Unsurprisingly, the Spaniard didn’t hide his irritation.
“If you speak to me every lap I will disconnect the radio,” he snapped over team comms, demanding a bit more peace to focus on the job at hand.
But the F1 veteran regrouped and charged back through the field, helped by a soft-to-medium tyre strategy that allowed him to claw back places and close in on Hamilton’s Ferrari in the closing laps.
“The car was fast, the car felt fast in the first stint, we opened a nice gap with the soft tyre, lasted longer than we expected so that was very good news,” he explained.
“And then a slow pit stop but the car was still very fast in the second stint and we finished in the same position. Some fun battles, Singapore is never easy to overtake but as I said, I had an advantage on the tyre as well.
“Everyone fitted the hard in the second stint, I fitted the medium, so that was a good call from the team and I had this tyre advantage that gave the opportunity to overtake.”
Alonso crossed the line just 0.4 seconds behind Hamilton – before inheriting seventh place when the Briton was hit with a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits.
Broadcast Blunder
While fans thrilled at the final-lap showdown, many were quick to note that F1’s television direction had, somewhat unbelievably, missed most of the battle.
The irony wasn’t lost on Alonso, who spotted that F1’s official account had instead shared his earlier fiery radio message.
Ever the entertainer, Alonso responded on X (formerly Twitter) with a perfectly timed jab.
“With pole position secured for the private radio broadcast, time to fine-tune the main coverage and bring all the on-track excitement to the fans! Vamos!”
The comment struck exactly the right note — playful yet pointed, funny yet factual. In a race weekend full of drama, Alonso managed to remind everyone that Formula 1’s best action often speaks louder than the radio chatter.
And as ever, the 44-year-old did it with a wink, a grin, and a performance that kept the grandstands – if not always the cameras – on their feet.
