Toto Wolff has all but ended speculation linking Max Verstappen with Mercedes by publicly backing George Russell as part of the team's long-term future, confirming the Briton will remain alongside championship leader Kimi Antonelli through the 2027 Formula 1 season.
For months, Verstappen's name has hovered over the Mercedes driver market, with the four-time world champion repeatedly linked to a sensational switch away from Red Bull.
But after final practice for the Austrian Grand Prix, Wolff delivered his clearest statement yet that the Silver Arrows have no intention of breaking up their current pairing.
Asked whether Russell's confidence about remaining at Mercedes next season effectively ruled Verstappen out of the equation, Wolff left little room for interpretation.
"Yeah, we don't want to change things, and we've said that also to George. I think it's a line-up that is good for us. I'm very happy with the two of them,” the Mercedes chief said.
The remarks effectively cement Russell's place alongside Antonelli and, unless circumstances change dramatically, close the door on Verstappen joining the Brackley-based squad in 2027.
Russell earns Wolff's backing
Russell's season has not matched the dream start he enjoyed with victory in Australia, but Mercedes believes the results fail to tell the full story.
Poorly timed Safety Cars and reliability setbacks have repeatedly hampered the Briton's championship challenge, even though his performances have remained consistently strong.

Wolff believes Russell has handled the situation with impressive composure.
"He's coping well," continued the Austrian. "You know, you can see the last one and a half days were difficult and then at the end, he was quickest [in FP3].
"You're talking about fine margins, and I think it's about keeping yourself in the confidence zone, trusting in your driving, trusting in your decisions that you're making with your mechanics in terms of setups. And then, often, it's just that simple, just drive.
"He doesn't need to prove to anyone that he has the speed. We know he has the speed and the ability."
Mercedes focused on stability
With Mercedes leading the Constructors' championship and winning all but one race this season, the team has become one of the most coveted destinations on the grid.
That success naturally fueled speculation that Verstappen could eventually make the switch to Brackley. Recent reports have even suggested the Dutchman has explored his options elsewhere for 2027, namely McLaren.
Wolff's latest comments, however, send a clear message: Mercedes believes it already has the driver line-up capable of delivering future championships.
Rather than pursuing Formula 1's biggest name, the Silver Arrows appear committed to building around Russell and Antonelli for the next chapter of the sport's new regulatory era.
