George Russell described his Austrian Grand Prix victory as more than just another win – it was a crucial reminder that he still belongs at the very front of Formula 1.
The Mercedes driver delivered a composed performance at the Red Bull Ring, converting pole position into his second victory of the 2026 season and ending a difficult spell since his opening-round triumph in Melbourne.
Russell controlled the race from the front, managing pressure from Max Verstappen and Red Bull while navigating Virtual Safety Car interruptions and tyre strategy decisions to secure a 1.6-second victory.
The result also cut his championship deficit to Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who finished third, from 50 points to 40.
Russell enjoys long-awaited return to the top step
After a challenging run of races, Russell admitted the emotional significance of returning to victory lane was difficult to overstate.
“It’s incredible to be back on the top step. It’s been a little while, so I’m definitely going to enjoy this one this evening,” he said after the race.
“A lot of hard work from my team to get us back on track. Obviously there was a tricky run of form at one point.
“Max and Red Bull were incredibly quick this weekend, so kudos to them, but thanks to everyone, thanks to the fans. It was pretty toasty out there, so I’m looking forward to a drink now.”

Russell’s only blemish came late in the race when he ran wide at Turn 3, but with Verstappen and Antonelli pushing hard behind him, he explained that maintaining the pace required constantly operating on the limit.
“I was having to push every single lap, and when you push those boundaries there’s bound to be a small mistake or two in there, and I know how quick the guys were behind,” he explained.
“Obviously Kimi has been extraordinarily quick this whole season, so every lap I was looking at the timing board. We pitted on the early side, and I knew it was going to be a long stint, but the team timed it to perfection.”
Victory provides psychological boost ahead of Silverstone
Beyond the points gained, Russell believes his Austrian weekend has delivered a vital confidence boost after a period that tested him mentally.
After also securing pole position in Barcelona, the Briton feels his recent performances have reaffirmed his ability to fight at the highest level.
“The tough races definitely test you psychologically, and these last two weekends for me have been vitally important to remind myself I can do it,” he said.

With his home race at Silverstone next on the calendar, Russell heads into the weekend encouraged by the strength of his Mercedes package.
“Single lap, race pace, was very strong this weekend, and on a track that is probably not very well-suited to my style, so I’m looking forward to heading to Silverstone next week, seeing all the home fans. I’m sure it’s going to be great,” he concluded.
After rediscovering winning form in Austria, Russell arrives at his home Grand Prix with momentum restored – and a renewed belief that he can challenge for more.
