Carlos Sainz Jr says it is “crucial” that Toro Rosso and Red Bull work closely together to improve the reliability of the Renault power unit.
While Toro Rosso was able to complete 136 laps on day three of testing at Jerez, power unit issues for Daniel Ricciardo limited him to less than 50. With Renault only supplying the two teams this season, Sainz Jr said it is important Toro Rosso works closely with the senior team to ensure both can learn from each other during testing.
“I think it is crucial,” Sainz Jr said. “We are working more together than ever with Red Bull, so they will look at our mileage positively and we will learn from their reliability issues. It shows the good job STR at doing at this stage.”
And Sainz Jr explained his final day of running in the car at the first test was not without its own problems despite the high mileage.
“Small niggles but the good thing is that though we had a couple of reliability issues, they were small and we managed to solve them and kept going. We are starting to know a new car and we are very happy with this.”
