Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner issued a clear warning to Daniel Ricciardo, cautioning the Aussie that he would be nothing more than a number two driver at Mercedes or Ferrari.
Following the recent extension of Max Verstappen's contract with Red Bull until the end of 2020, pundits question whether his team mate will do the same, or eventually succumb to a calling from Mercedes or Ferrari.
Regardless of any offers which may come his way, Ricciardo believes it's early days still and highly unlikely he will be signing a contract with anyone in the short term.
Horner has taken a lead on the subject however, claiming a move to either outfit would hinder his chances of winning the world championship.
"It’s an absolute priority for us to retain the drivers,” the Red Bull team boss told Sky F1.
"Here, they have equal chance to go for that championship. If he goes to Mercedes or Ferrari he’s just going to be a number two driver.
"Daniel knows that we want to retain him in the team, and hopefully it won’t take too long to sort that out."
Horner reiterated his belief that Red Bull Racing boasted the strongest driver line-up in Formula 1 and the perfect match for the team and the brand.
"This is the best line-up in Formula 1. And this is the best line-up we’ve ever had in Red Bull Racing.
"The way the team works, the way they represent themselves and push themselves. The respect and relationship is there between the two drivers."
