So far only one practice session has been possible, with Nico Rosberg topping a wet FP1 on Friday morning before torrential rain hit the Circuit of the Americas. As a result, the afternoon session was cancelled completely, with lightning in the area and the lack of a medical helicopter preventing any running.
Despite further heavy rain, the FIA is trying to run FP3 at the scheduled time of 10am local time, although the circuit itself is closed to spectators until midday. Any running that does take place in FP3 could decide the grid if qualifying is unable to be held on Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning.
No teams are allowed to use the intermediate tyre at the start of the final practice session, with the FIA stating only full wet weather tyres will be permitted until further notice.
The heavy rain and high winds - pushed in to Texas as a result of Hurricane Patricia in Mexico - are forecast to continue throughout Saturday and in to Sunday morning. However, the weather is set to improve on Sunday afternoon, which should allow a race to take place.
