Nico Rosberg will start from pole position in wet conditions in Austin after a treacherous qualifying session was held on Sunday morning. Rosberg was fastest at the end of Q2 and therefore handed pole when the final part of qualifying was cancelled due to the weather.
Heavy rain had already seen qualifying postponed until Sunday and it persisted throughout the morning, with conditions deteriorating to the point where Q3 was cancelled. However, the weather has improved since then and the race is set to start on time on a wet circuit.
Lewis Hamilton will start alongside Rosberg on the front row and can win the drivers' championship this weekend if he outscores his team-mate by two points and Sebastian Vettel by nine. Hamilton's hopes look good with Vettel starting from 13th place on the grid as a result of a power unit penalty.
The two Red Bulls will hope to threaten Mercedes in the race as Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat start from third and fourth respectively, with Ricciardo admitting wet conditions will suit the team. Row three is made up of the Force Indias of Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg ahead of Felipe Massa and Max Verstappen.
Kimi Raikkonen also has a ten-place grid penalty and will start from 18th place, while Valtteri Bottas had to take a new gearbox after qualifying, resulting in a five-place grid penalty which drops him to 16th.
