Sergio Perez says a potential deal with Aston Martin would boost Force India's potential to allow it to challenge closer to the front.
Talks are ongoing between Force India, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker which would see a rebranding of the team and fresh sponsorship from the whiskey company. While Bob Fernley has warned any deal is still "a little way off", Perez says such investment is required to help Force India move further up the grid.
"To do the next step, we need a better budget," Perez said when asked about the Aston Martin deal. "I believe in the team. I know the plans of the team, so definitely we are in a good position and confident. The team is working very well together, so I see big potential.
"It is a big brand and you always aim to be linked to the bigger brands and manufacturers, so if that comes it would be something very nice."
And Perez highlights how difficult it will be for Force India to improve on its finishing position this season, with the gap from Red Bull in fourth in the constructors' championship to Force India in fifth currently standing at 60 points.
"Hopefully we can secure fifth in the constructors’ championship this weekend, which is the priority for us. Next year we will have to improve that. We have to aim for fourth but that will be a big ask for us. The gap is very big, so still a long way to go."
