Fernando Alonso thinks that partnering Toro Rosso rookie sensation Max Verstappen has boosted Carlos Sainz’ credentials.
The younger Spaniard graduated to Formula One in the wake of his 2014 Formula Renault 3.5 title, and was pitted against the much-hyped Verstappen. Although Sainz eventually trailed the Dutch prodigy by 31 points, his maiden F1 campaign remains favourably considered, which is a testament to his raw speed but also to the sort of competition he was facing.
Alonso, who had to deal with a standout debutant when partnering Lewis Hamilton at McLaren in 2007, knows how influential a strong team-mate can be in shaping F1 peers’ perception.
“Having someone like [Verstappen] alongside you is a good thing,” Alonso told Spanish publication As. “Sometimes you have a partner whom no one really believes in… and your actions go unnoticed.
“But this is not the case with Max and I think Carlos has had a great year. Everyone in the paddock has a good opinion of him, he has earned the respect of all.”
Alonso and Sainz have known each other for many years, with the latter openly admitting to being a fan of the double world champion. Alonso, who easily dispatched the likes of Tarso Marques and Alex Yoong on his own debut season at Minardi in 200, is equally ready to praise his countryman’s achievements.
“Of all the young drivers who have recently climbed through the junior categories, Carlos was the best in my opinion. He has come to F1 and been fortunate to be able to show it.”
Sainz will have another opportunity to prove his worth in 2016, as the 21-year-old returns for a second campaign with Verstappen at Toro Rosso.
