However, next year's 24-race schedule that will feature Qatar's return and the arrival of Las Vegas, required a difficult selection process.
But common sense has prevailed, and while Spa may not remain an annual fixture on F1's agenda beyond 2023, next year's race is safe, although a firm date has yet to be set.
"Formula 1 can confirm that the Belgian Grand Prix will be on the 2023 calendar following an agreement to extend our partnership together. Further details on the 2023 calendar will be announced in due course," F1's statement read.
It is believed that Spa's longer-term status will evolve around a rotation scheme, possibly with the French Grand Prix.
In the interim, the Belgian organisers have pulled out the stops this weekend to provide off-track entertainment for fans that has complemented the circuit's efforts to revamp part of its facilities while also extensively changing the run-off area of its legendary Eau Rouge-Raidillon corner.
