The FIA has announced the addition of a fourth DRS zone to the Marina Bay Street Circuit in a bid to spice up the action at this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix.
The decision comes as part of ongoing efforts to improve overtaking opportunities on the notoriously challenging track.
Since its debut on the Formula 1 calendar in 2008, the Singapore Grand Prix has been known for its tight, twisty layout that often limits overtaking possibilities.
Despite discussions among teams and the FIA about adding a fourth DRS zone last year, no consensus was reached at that time.
“All the drivers, we all requested it from the FIA,” said Lewis Hamilton at the time. “The FIA asked all the teams and there’s a couple of teams that turned it down.”
However, the decision has been reversed for this year's race. Drivers will now have access to their Drag Reduction System (DRS) between Turns 14 and 16, in addition to the existing DRS zones between Turns 13 and 14 and Turns 5 and 7.
With the new zone coming into play in a tight section of the track, it’s hoped that it will create more overtaking chances and make the race more exciting for both drivers and fans.
Finally, the section of track with the new DRS zone has been resurfaced for this year’s race, along with other areas between Turns 3 and 9, and Turns 10 and 12, which also feature new asphalt.
