McLaren’s preparations for the Spanish Grand Prix hit a snag on Friday after a mechanical breakdown stranded Lando Norris during second practice at the brand-new Madring venue.
The semi-permanent circuit – a hybrid combining purpose-built asphalt with narrow urban thoroughfares – presented a steep learning curve for the entire grid.
With no prior historical data to lean on, track time was at a premium as teams worked to decipher the layout.
However, Norris' afternoon came to a swift halt after completing just two laps in FP2, pulling into the pit lane with a terminal gearbox fault that mechanics could not rectify before the session drew to a close.
The downtime leaves the reigning World Champion facing a steep uphill battle for the remainder of the weekend. Earlier in the day, Norris ended FP1 in sixth place, nearly nine tenths adrift of George Russell's benchmark time for Mercedes.
Mechanical setback at a critical junction
Losing track time at an unfamiliar venue creates an immediate disadvantage, leaving engineering staff scrambling to recover lost ground before competitive running begins on Saturday.
"Gearbox problem for Lando, that's obviously a big setback for him," said Mark Temple, McLaren's Technical Director for Performance, after the session. "Going into FP3 we'll be trying to do as much as we can to give him back track time.
"It was as expected, a very technical, tough track for the drivers, trying to find their way and learn the track. Deal with the very hot temperatures on the tyres. For sure track time for Lando will be very important tomorrow."
Balancing act on the streets of Madrid
On the other side of the garage, Oscar Piastri provided McLaren with its sole source of data during FP2. The Australian navigated both practice sessions, recording the eighth and seventh fastest times respectively as he sought to dial in the MCL40.
Engineers struggled throughout the day to settle on an optimal compromise between straight-line efficiency and high-speed stability, all while managing severe thermal degradation on the tyres under scorching conditions.
"I felt like we got a bit closer in FP2, which was good, but we're still lacking a bit of pace it seems," said Piastri.
"We'll try and improve, it's been an interesting day learning a new circuit. It's certainly tough to get on top of but it's been a day full of learning. Hopefully we can find a bit more tomorrow.
"Trying to extract the performance on a street circuit like this is pretty challenging. That's the biggest thing for us at the moment. Hopefully tomorrow we can make things a bit easier and find just a bit more consistency and a bit more ability to get that time out of the car."
