Mercedes has lodged its intention to appeal against Nico Rosberg's time penalty which demoted him to third place in the British Grand Prix.
A gearbox problem struck Rosberg in the closing stages of the race, with Mercedes telling him which setting to change to in an attempt to rectify the issue. Rosberg was then told to avoid seventh gear, to which he replied: "What does that mean? I need to shift through it." Rosberg's race engineer then confirmed he should shift through to eighth gear.
Following the exchange the race stewards investigated the incident and Rosberg - who had originally finished second - was handed a ten-second time penalty which demoted him to third behind Max Verstappen.
Mercedes has since confirmed it has lodged its intention to appeal the decision, however the regulations suggest such an appeal will not be permitted.
The stewards decision reads: "10 Second Time Penalty imposed after the race in accordance with Article 38.3 (10 seconds added to elapsed race time).
Article 38.3 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations outlines the penalties available to the stewards, of which there are six - a five second time penalty; a ten second time penalty; a drive through; a ten second stop and go; a time penalty of any length and a reprimand. Article 38.3 then states "If any of the six penalties above are imposed they shall not be subject to appeal."
