Nico Rosberg set the pace in the opening session on Friday morning, beating team-mate Lewis Hamilton by half a second. Rosberg was on the soft tyre this morning while Hamilton's best lap came on mediums, with the Ferraris - third and fourth quickest - also on the softs but over a second slower.
Fernando Alonso impressed for McLaren with the fifth fastest time ahead of the two Red Bulls, although Daniel Ricciardo's quickest lap came on the hard compound, suggesting the true pace of the Red Bull has yet to be seen at Sepang.
While the Sepang International Circuit has been on the F1 calendar since 1999, this year represents a new slot and a new challenge for the teams and drivers. Traditionally at the start of the season, the 18-month gap since the last race in Malaysia has allowed the organisers to resurface the track and made modifications to a number of corners, with the second and final corners seeing the main change.
