Carlos Sainz drove a strong home race on Sunday, delivering a points-scoring finish which puts Renault fourth in the Constructors' standings for the first time since the works outfit's return to F1 in 2016.

After a troubled start to the Barcelona weekend, the team gradually improved its performance. Sainz launched his race from ninth on the grid, gained a spot at the start and held his own thereafter.

"I think it’s a very positive result for me and the team," he said.

"We can be very proud of what we’ve achieved this weekend as this track was not ideal for us.

"We turned things around well since Friday, did a very good start and managed to finish seventh which I think was the best we could hope for."

Sainz was Spain's other local hero on Sunday alongside Fernando Alonso. And there was no lack of vocal support in the grandstands for the 23-year-old over the course of the 66-lap event.

"It feels great to get another good result at home and I hope the fans have enjoyed the race," he enthused.

"Many thanks to all for their support! It’s good progress for the midfield fight and important points for the team.

"We have areas to work on, but we are making good progress. Let’s keep pushing."
